Chinese Herbal Medicine

In the US, some acupuncturists undergo additional training to learn herbal medicine, and there is a nationally recognized board certification that consumers can look for when choosing a practitioner qualified to prescribe Chinese Herbs. The practice of Chinese Herbal Medicine involves the use of natural substances combined into special formulas that are specific to a patient’s diagnosis and symptomatology. The pharmacopeia includes mineral, animal, and primarily, plant substances which are then cooked into a tea, or may be administered as a tincture, tablet, capsule, or “instant tea” granules. The herbal formulas can be used alone or in conjunction with acupuncture. Some practitioners prescribe one or several formulas while others customize formulas for each patient specifically. The herbs are then taken once to several times daily for various time spans.
